Marathon
is a community located in "the heart of the Florida Keys" just
50 miles from Key West and approximately two hours driving time
from Miami. We are primarily a community of family homes with a
permanent population of less than 12,500. Our seasonal population
increases during the winter months with second home or condominium
owners. Our tropical climate averages 78.50 F year round, with
no snow, no frost, but plenty of sunshine!
As you can imagine, we are a water-oriented island with fishing,
diving, sailing and water sports, just some of the reasons people
move here to live, work and play! Our primary industry is tourism,
followed by fishing.
According to local legend, Marathon got its name
early this century when we were the base of operations for the construction
of Flagler’s Railroad, and the workers referred to the non-stop
work schedule as a "marathon". Our history is being well
preserved by the local Pigeon Key Foundation as well as by the Museums
of Crane Point Hammock, both of which are located in Marathon.
